A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
